REAL ID Act - What You Need to Know

The REAL ID Act is now in full effect as of May 7, 2025. Here's what you need to know.

The REAL ID Act was originally passed in 2005 in response to the 9/11 Commission's recommendations to improve identification standards.

A REAL ID is required for: - Boarding domestic flights - Entering federal buildings - Accessing military bases

Documents you need to get a REAL ID: - Birth certificate or valid passport - Social Security Number proof - Two proofs of New Jersey residency (utility bill, bank statement, etc.)

For New Jersey residents, visit your local NJMVC (New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission) to get a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card.

Don't wait until the last minute - visit NJMVC early to avoid long lines and processing delays.
